Shaun Ross and Amber Mark Explore the Fatality of Attraction on 'UNISEX'

When boiled down to a science, love is categorized by three categories: lust, attraction, and attachment. Each of these phases are dictated by various hormones: ushered in by testosterone and estrogen (lust), followed by dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin (attraction) and finalized with oxytocin and vasopressin (attachment). When these hormones amalgamate, we have the perfect formula for falling head over heels, a beautiful but sometimes treacherous dissent.

If in actuality love could be boiled down to only a science, the pursuit of love would be considerably more graceful, however when hormones intermingle with the nuances of life, things can get... well... complicated. Shaun Ross and Amber Mark explore these darker hues of entanglement in their recent single "UNISEX."

Shaun Ross may be an up-and-coming recording artist, but his artistic endeavors are known internationally. His striking features and intoxicating persona in front of the camera have made considerable waves in the fashion and visual arts worlds. Past collaborations with top tier designers such as Givenchy and Alexander McQueen, magazine features in Vogue, GQ, Nylon, etc., and prominent appearances in music videos for the likes of Beyoncé, Lana Del Rey, and Katy Perry, have made Ross a staple across the board.

However, it was his 2019 collaboration with British House DJ Duke Dumont, "Red Light Green Light," that put Shaun Ross, the recording artist, on the board in a tangible way. Fast forward to today, with a debut album under his belt and this stunning collaboration with Amber Mark kicking off 2022 with a bang, Ross has honed into his enthralling sound and artist persona like never before.

"UNISEX" was inspired by Peter Berg's 2008 film Hancock starring Will Smith and Charlize Theron. The song gives an exhilarating musical take on the fatality of attraction. Featuring smooth R&B vocals over a synth-laden, electronic instrumental, the sonorities of the track mirror the foreboding yet eager nature of the lyrics. The song's title highlights the occurrence of two becoming one, which is further enforced by the seamless dance between Ross and Mark's vocals, leaving the listener the challenge of differentiating between the two voices.

Ross shares, “Love is the one thing that can be felt between space and time, whether it is beautiful or hindering. The song is inspired by the movie Hancock - where two lovers were granted immortality but come to find out they've fallen in love before and have been in love for centuries. They soon discover that they can no longer be together because their love causes a cataclysmic event ending in their doom. I've (Shaun) been a fan of Amber Mark, hence our wonderful friendship. I've always felt that when it comes to our lives and life experiences we share similar experiences, especially with us both being two Earth signs. We deeply feel the world around us, so we both could relate on this topic of love being so beautiful, but that it too can cause unfortunate events."
