cehryl's "Hide n Seek" Is a Portrait of Indie Pop Perfection

cehryl is an understated and underrated portrait of indie perfection. The Hong Kong - native originally found her melodic foundation in the likes of pop-punk icon Avril Lavigne and Taiwanese pop star Jay Chou, but she also owes as much to the heart-rending musings for Justin Vernon as she does Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind for coloring her musical palette. It comes as no surprise then that her latest single sounds like it could easily score any coming-of-age film.

"Hide n Seek" is a simple and straightforward song of blossoming love that evokes all the nostalgia of circa mid-2000s indie pop. With its sunny disposition and cehryl's softly-sung self-realizations, it moves at a carefree, blissful pace. "Hey Ma / I think I might be in trouble / I think I might be in love / Hey pa / I think my heart size just doubled," confesses cehrly atop a series of handclaps and a Beach Boys-evoking electric guitar. The effect is one of young love captured in one of the best three-minute-shy indie pop offerings of the year.

In another universe, cehryl's "Hide n Seek" would score Zach Braff's grand moment of realization in Garden State (not the one about staring into the abyss but more any of the falling in love with Natalie Portman bits). However, as we live in this reality, you can take peace in the fact knowing it is the perfect song to put on the second you start feeling butterflies.
