Ashe has returned with the triumphant “Stop The Wedding!” after a meteoric past year. Having joined forces with her close friend and collaborator FINNEAS as The Favors, the superduo released The Dream, a love letter to 70s pop that honed on the poignant storytelling and luxurious melodies that falls perfectly in line with the raw, emotional structure that is found thematically in her songwriting.
Her third LP Willson released in fall of 2024 completed a trilogy including her debut Ashlyn (2021) and sophomore project Rae (2022) and saw Ashe return to her found home of Nashville, Tennessee after time taken away from music, and the result a powerful and uplifting meditation on self-love and healing that impacts listeners from start to finish. “Stop The Wedding!” stays true to Ashe’s sonic identity with its unflinching lyricism and symphonic production, exploring the complexity of relationships and the all too human reality of the uneasiness that can emerge from self-exploration.
Ashe’s label debut with Atlantic Records, “Stop The Wedding!” leans into a theatrical soundscape, bringing her audience in from the opening swells of orchestral violins, dropping the listener into the special day with Ashe’s vocals dancing over the building tempo, “I found a secret note, burn after reading this, it’s supernatural the feelings sinking in.” that ushers way for doubt building in our narrator’s mind.
Ashe uses striking visual lyricism, of icebergs, a menacing sky and seeing through the flaws of our pseudo-smooth groom to build tension that is shattered in the chorus. “You don’t have to waste your night and wear your heart out // the warning signs are flashing now // stop the wedding!” Freeing our narrator from each of the responsibilities the day of, delivered with tender reassurance that it isn’t too late to back out if it isn’t right. “Even though the table’s set // the guests are waiting // You can burn your dress and run away.”
The track’s bridge culminates in a glorious inner-monologue with a delectable buildup of pulsating drums driving the rhythm, physically capturing the excitement of our narrator deciding to free herself. The track closes with a celebratory liveliness, bringing the message home that it is never too late to decide what is best for you, expectations be damned.
Ashe is currently on the road as support for Benson Boone this summer, and we’re excited to see what this new era ushers in next.
