Crooked Teeth Hold On To Self-Worth With New Single "Comedic Relief" [Premiere] | THE NOISE

In the words of Gladiator, "Are you not entertained?!" California rock trio Crooked Teeth continue to celebrate the upcoming release of their debut LP, My Favorite Player, by dropping a brand new music video for their track "Comedic Relief." The single is a high-octane effort oozing with angst as the band wrestles with the complexities of identity and unfulfilling relationships.

The track eases itself in with brewing guitar riffs and understated bass lines seething beneath the surface. Vocalist and guitarist Emma Oakley croons softly over the boiling production, dread-filled lyrics, ultimately wondering whether or not she will lose her sense of self as time passes. The chorus erupts with intense breakdowns, featuring raging guitars, throttling percussion patterns, and throbbing bass as Oakley belts, "I could be your comedic relief/ Or would you like me better with my heart on my sleeve?" proclaiming that she'll shed herself and become whatever someone needs her to be.

"'Comedic Relief' delves into the complexity of personal identity and relationship entanglement through the lens of theater," explains Oakley. "The lyrics describe the internal conflict I often find myself facing within relationships that is, a yearning to be seen as valuable in that persons life vs knowing and validating my own self worth. The video portrays myself attempting to captivate my love interest's attention by doing a series of acts I am unskilled at, ultimately, making a fool of myself."

The accompanying music video, viewed below, is a fun and dynamic visual that follows Oakley as she enters a comedy club to try to woo her disinterested love interest. Footage of the band performing the track, intercut scenes of Oakley preparing for her comedy act, which starts out fine enough but soon falls apart. Following a failed series of acts, she panics to her bandmates in the green room for advice on what to do. After some convincing, they agree to try the "sex appeal" route, resulting in the trio, now wearing cheerleader outfits, getting back on stage and performing a routine.

The track features on the band's debut album, My Favorite Player, out November 17, alongside previous releases "Bleach" and "Problem" featuring Jon Harvie. According to guitarist and co-frontman Tyson Evans, "Problem" is his favorite from the freshmen LP and shows off the band's ability to seamlessly fuse pop, rock, and pop punk in their craft, sharing, "We also wanted to pay homage to the pop-rock sensibility of early Kelly Clarkson while really driving a hard-hitting, headbang-demanding chorus, and I think we nailed this one right on the head."
