Flipturn Navigates Human Connection in Experimental Rock Track "Sunlight"

Following their critically acclaimed debut, Shadowglow, Flipturn is poised to take their sound to new heights with their sophomore album, Burnout Days. The five-piece band, consisting of Dillon Basse, Tristan Duncan, Mitch Fountain, Madeline Jarman, and Devon VonBalson, has been candid about the challenges of navigating their mid-20s while touring and creating music.

Their latest single, "Sunlight," is a moving exploration of family, addiction, and the human condition. Inspired by lead singer Dillon Basse's personal experience watching his sister support their mother through rehab, the song delves into themes of acceptance, resilience, and the power of human connection. Departing from their indie-rock roots, “Sunlight” sees Flipturn incorporate elements of experimental rock. The track opens with a mesmerizing blend of distorted guitars and resonant cymbals, setting the stage for a vulnerable expression that delivers a message of hope.

“Sunlight might be the most personal and honest song I’ve written lyrically. I started writing words for it the day my mom had to be driven to rehab again by my little sister. I wanted to tell a story of acceptance of those closest to us for who they are because ultimately they are the people shaping us and changing us the most. My mom took up growing bonsais when she got home from rehab as a hobby to help prevent her from drinking. She would also recite and preach to us the serenity prayer. “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” That’s really where the idea for the rest of the song came from. Like a bonsai tree's branches needing to be cut in order for it to grow, human beings also need to be pruned in order to grow, even if it hurts.”

Basse continues to recount the poignant story of a loved one suffering from addiction , “Everyone’s been asking me/how are you going to handle yourself?/ Looking at the family tree, it might be something that you’re dealt.” which hooks the listener with a tone that is not only vulnerable, but confessional. The track delves into a narrative that explores the themes of love and connection as Basse recounts, “Amy’s on her way to rehab again/Lily’s gonna drive her there/Every ounce of gas that she has, Mama she’ll take you anywhere.” creating an atmospheric and impactful listening experience.

“Sunlight” is a testament to the power of music to heal and inspire. In sharing a personal story, Basse invites listeners to confront their own challenges and find solace in the universal human experience, of pushing forward in times of uncertainty and rising above.

With Burnout Days on the horizon, Flipturn will continue their ascent as one of the most innovative bands out now. Listen to Flipturn below:
