Fred again.. Synthesizes Two Different Eras of Baby Keem in “leavemealone”

Few artists have had a 2023 quite like Fred Again.. This year, our king released an album with ambient legend Brian Eno, he sold out eight nights at Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium, the most consecutive nights in the venue's nearly hundred-year run, and he headlined Coachella alongside Skrillex and Four Tet at the eleventh hour. While most would be celebrating the end of the year with a well-deserved siesta, Fred Again.. consistently proves himself to be a cut above the rest. Today, he releases "leavemealone," his long-awaited collaboration with Baby Keem, and a high-energy and iconoclastic banger from two of music's most influential acts.

Splicing together vocal tracks from Keem’s “south africa,” which appeared on 2021's The Melodic Blue, and the Isaiah Rashad-approved DIE FOR MY BITCH cut “BULLIES,” Fred Again..’s newest release departs from his classic UK garage and house style in favor of something far more risky and alternative. Synthesizing two different eras of Baby Keem into something brand new, “leavemealone” sees Fred Again.. taking a bold step forward with a heater whose sound is just as futuristic as it is understated. If you listen carefully, you’ll probably be able to hear even the most hard-headed skeptics being converted into stans under the influence of the track's electric vocal chops and thundering bass signals.

Has there been an electronic and hip-hop collaboration this significant since The Weeknd and Oneohtrix Point Never? Lil B and Clams Casino? Skrillex and A$AP Rocky? The answer may be up for debate, but what is undeniable is that “leavemealone” is the latest in a string of singles that sees Fred Again.. stretching his musical boundaries and redefining dance music in his wake. After his recent singles with Jozzy and Obongjayar, it might be safe to say that gone are the days of Fred churning out palatable club anthems. Now we have entered an era of refreshing originality and genre-warping ear candy.
