Gigi Perez's “Sailor Song” Sees the Rising Star Yearning in the Eye of the Storm

TikTok yearners at large have been begging for Gigi Perez’s “Sailor Song” since her stunning teasers of it this spring, and it’s finally out in the world. After listeners wholeheartedly embraced the social media snippets, “Sailor Song” has skyrocketed to the Top 100 Spotify Trending tracks, just one day after its release.

The visceral chorus is much of what has entranced Perez’s blossoming audience, the lyrics a poetic plea, “Kiss me on the mouth and love me like a sailor.” Equal parts lust and love, these few lines have had listeners begging for more, and the full song to follow does not disappoint. This simile, of loving someone like a sailor, is what the entire song branches from, and it aches with the significance of two intertwining interpretations—one of devotion, and one of need.

The devotional half comes from the idea that sailors are at sea for most of the year, yet still come home to the same partner, enduring all weather to return to them. This sentiment lives in the sweeping emotional expanse Perez has orchestrated in “Sailor Song.” Waves take shape in the form of vocal layers, cascading over the steadfast acoustic guitar. Impossibly wide, the harmonies fill every corner of the track with feeling, embodying the yearning of a sailor at sea, looking for the way home. There’s also a bright note of horns twinkling here and there, another spark of depth. Perez builds this soundscape so instinctually that listeners won’t notice they’re in the eye of the storm until it’s enveloped them.

This devotional, emotionally rich side of “Sailor Song” meets in the middle with the raw need, which makes up the other side of the story. Much like a sailor, there’s a coarse, almost naked element to this track, manifesting both lyrically and sonically. Perez puts words to lust-turned-worship. “And when you get a taste, can you tell me, what's my flavor? / I don't believe in God, but I believe that you're my savior,” she sings. Then, she siphons it into the performance, coaxing unabashed desire out of the layers of vocals and urging acoustic guitars.

A primal sort of adoration lives at the crossroads of this song’s interpretations, and the heat of it courses through every facet of “Sailor Song.” Perez has captivated audiences with this track, making it an exciting gateway into her equally visceral discography and future releases.
