Los Angeles alternative soul artist KiNG MALA's latest single "Golden Retriever Boy" is paw-sibly one her best tracks yet. According to Urban Dictionary, the term "Golden Retriever Boy" refers to "a male who is goofy and gullible, yet very loyal and protective."

In the case of this song, KiNG MALA (née Areli Castro) is singing about a former love interest, who put on the golden retriever act but was actually more of a rottweiler. "Does your skin zip up like a sweater?," poses KiNG MALA. The alternative soul artist shares, "It’s about the sweet boy turning out to be the villain. It’s about betrayal and watching someone fall from the pedestal you put them on. It’s also about fuck boys… fuck fuck boys.“

Unleashing a menacing bass line and a groove-laden beat, Castro delivers her playful lyrics with a healthy dose of sarcasm. We can almost sense her eyes rolling to the back of her head as she sings, "Go fetch another toy for yourself/ Go be a puppy for somebody else." Layered vocal harmonies add further depth to the song, while sassy hand claps create an IDGAF attitude.

KiNG MALA has certainly been making some noise this year, with her viral TikTok videos racking up views in the millions. Having created a dedicated fanbase, the musician often posts videos explaining the whole process behind what goes into releasing a song and even allows her followers to have input on what single to release next.
