Let Andria Rose Be Your 'Satellite," + Vulnerability, Tour with Vansire, and A Fireside Glass of Wine [Q&A]

Sweet, sultry and passionate, Andria Rose has been a mysterious playlist backdrop to some of your more romantic rendezvous, and accordingly we were very curious to find out more about this Texas native. Bending styles with a soft delivery and that classic whisper chorus to emphasis the delicate melodies, she got us questioning what she was up too to and where it was all going, so we did the old letters through the air thing and here’s what we found out:

OnesToWatch: Who is Andria Rose?

Andria Rose: I am a singer/songwriter from Texas. I write music about love, lust, melancholia and everything in between. I tend to gravitate towards dreamy and lush sounds, aiming to transfix anybody who will listen. I’m Mexican American, and I love to implement elements of my culture in my work, oftentimes finding myself writing in English and Spanish. I grew up in South Texas, mainly on Selena – and I attribute my inspiration in wanting to be a singer to her. Aesthetically, I like to embody vintage elements, with a touch of modernity as well. Andria Rose Saldaña is my full name, but I just go by Andria Rose.

What is Satellite all about?

I wrote Satellite about being vulnerable in a relationship. When you’re on your own for the majority of your life, forced to kind of watch your own back and protect yourself, it’s difficult to allow yourself to let go of that and let someone in. It’s also difficult to accept a good thing as just being a good thing- at least for me. I divert to thinking there is or will be something that goes wrong; and I know that isn’t the healthiest mentality. I’m trying to let go of that, and just enjoy the moment for what it is. In a relationship, all you really want is to feel understood and safe, and that’s really what the premise of the song is about. What’s the point in being with someone if it’s not a ride or die situation? The music video represents the different phases of my life in solitude, and being in those spaces, vulnerable and open. In regards to color, I’ve always felt like red best represents me and my sound. I don’t think I could ever really move on from using it in my visuals- but, I’ve definitely opened myself up more to color, both in my career and my personal life. You can really see this in the video. I think Satellite is the perfect introduction into this new era of color.

How’d you settle on your sound?

It took a lot of trial and error, honestly. It used to just be my guitar and I at open mic nights, then I formed a band with some guy friends in the summer after high school, and then it went back to being more of a solo thing. Around the time of going back to being solo, I began working exclusively with my creative partner, Bryan Cardenas. We’ve been writing/producing together for years, and through working with him, we’ve developed a consistency in our sound. It’s a real release to create with someone who understands you. So, my sound has gone from just being me on acoustic, to a little harder of a sound with a mostly electric guitar based band, to finally being what it is today- which I like to call Latin velvet dream pop. I think also pulling from my inspirations as a child, like Selena, Shakira, Amy Winehouse, Nancy Sinatra, to name a few- I’ve been able to truly find myself.

What do you hope your fans take away from Satellite?

I can really only hope that my fans’ takeaway is that it’s okay to be vulnerable, and relish in a good moment for what makes it good. I’ve had a hard time letting people in, and this song is my way of working through that. When I went on tour earlier this year with Vansire, we played this song for the very first time, and it was such a surreal moment to feel the energy of just getting lost in a song and a moment, and have it be reciprocated back to me. People were really into it. Honestly, I really just hope it serves as a release for others, as it has for me.

How do you feel your sound has evolved or changed since your last release?

Satellite pays homage to my OG sound, but also is a nod to the future. With this release, I felt ready to experiment a little more with my vocals, pitching them up and layering. I’m having more fun with the possibilities of what you can do with vocals. My producer, Bryan, took to the vocoder for the end of the song and surprised me with it. He was working on the instrumental break, and showed me, thinking I wouldn’t be into it, but I was. I think it’s such a cool, subtle detail to have there. I also think it adds to the storyline of the song, almost like a talk back, but more interesting because it sounds like a robot.

Can we expect more of this style in the future?

Yes, totally. I am opening myself up more to being experimental and having more fun with trying different approaches to writing. I also don’t want to be predictable; I never really want my fans to know what to expect next from me.

What else should we be on the lookout for?

In the near future, I am working on some really cool collaborations with artists and other creatives that I’m so excited for. I’m looking forward to expanding my horizons in that way.

What's inspiring you right now outside of music?

Right now, I am really inspired by the upcoming spring season, and the way we transition into it. Where I live, in Texas, the weather is just perfect right now. I absolutely love when the Mountain Laurels begin to bloom- you can’t walk outside without smelling them in the air. It’s such a beautiful and lush time. I really love to take walks and bask in the sun, and put my bare feet on the grass. In moments like that, I am able to be more present, and am reminded that all the stress and worries that tend to consume me, don’t matter; and I can just be.

Food group / activity best suited to enjoying your work?

A nice glass of wine by the fireplace, or a night drive with your lover.

Musically, who is new but making all the right moves? Who are your current OnesToWatch?

My girl Quelle Rox is an absolute star. She came up on my discover weekly years ago, and I was immediately obsessed. We connected on social media, and long story short, we now have 2 songs together, and she’s also my closest friend in the industry. She is a powerhouse and has such a beautiful voice, and makes beautiful music. I’m definitely taking after her as much as I can, because she’s captivating.
