Michigander Guides Us Through Life's Peak and Valleys in 'It Will Never Be The Same,' Premieres "Cannonball" Video
Change is inevitable. No matter how hard we strive to retain the status quo or flail against shifting tides, change—small and large—is unavoidable. This inescapable truth builds the emotional crux of Michigander’s latest EP, It Will Never Be The Same.
It Will Never Be The Same sees Michigander, the buzzworthy indie rock project of Jason Singer, step boldly back into the spotlight after putting his musical life on pause to focus on rehabilitation from a severe leg injury. It’s little wonder then that this latest project from the Michigan native rings out as a celebration of all of life’s peaks and valleys—a euphoric romp accented by the harsh realizations of a life fully lived.
“It Will Never Be The Same is a collection of songs that's about being ok with change and striving to become a better human being,” shares Michigander. “These songs were all created out of a season of life that was some of the absolute best times and some of the absolute worst times. I think as human beings we don't tend to change until we are forced to. We need a wakeup call. These last few years have been that for me. And these last four EPs have been a diary of how I've gotten here, and while I don’t think I've ‘arrived,’ I think I just stuck the landing.”
The six-track project features fan favorites “Stay Out Of It,” “In My Head,” and “Superglue,” which has been making its rounds at radio stations across the country, as well as the new single “Cannonball” whose accompanying music video we are delighted to be premiering here today.
“Cannonball,” the EP’s closer, is a silver lining given sonic form. Finding solace and comfort in the arms of another, Michigander sings of the simple pleasure of sharing your life—that rare kind of love, whether it be familiar or romantic, that transforms any storm into a chance to catch a rainbow. It’s an infectiously optimistic track whose music video, directed by lifelong friend and fellow Detroit native Mathew Pimental, sees Michigander glued to his phone intercut by fourth wall-breaking videos that blur the line between fan and participant.
Altogether, It Will Never Be The Same retains all the hallmarks of what has carved Michigander’s name into our hearts. From the hopeful, heart-tugging lyricism to the anthemic, swelling instrumentation, it makes space for the artist to take a step forward in his artistic journey without sacrificing what came before it. Michigander may never be the same as we once knew him but we wouldn't have it any other way.
