Meet Philine Sonny, the German indie alternative artist with a voice dripping of honey and lyrics full of comforting nostalgia. After releasing her first album Lose Yourself in 2022, Sonny is back with her first solo release of 2023, “Drugs." The track arrives alongside the announcement of her upcoming EP, Invader, out in March of next year.
“Drugs” paints a vivid cinematic scope, channeling the energy of a coming-of-age story combined with a muted lust for life. There’s an underlying twinge of sadness that works dynamically with the youthful bliss of the track. To Sonny, endless possibilities of human experience feel within reach and this enthusiasm is perfectly captured, sonically and lyrically. Over a steady and enticing guitar strum, listeners are transported into the headspace of a young, hopeful romantic whose world is only as far as their small town city limits.
"'Drugs’ is the soundtrack to the movie playing in your head. It’s a romanticized idea of what life would look like if one was bold and reckless enough to let go of fear and daring to lose everything for the sake of feeling alive," shares Sonny.
A self-proclaimed introvert, 21-year-old Sony grew up in a small German city and taught herself how to write and produce music. She’s also heavily involved in her own visuals, creating and editing visualizers, canvases, artworks, and more. Her music reflects her true struggles with mental health struggles, combating imposter syndrome in relationships, and growing up in a place that never truly felt like home.
The “Drugs” music video, co-directed by Sonny herself, combines multiple visual art forms to showcase her wide array of tastes and skills. On top of the standard visuals of the artist matching the moodiness of the track in a car junkyard, there are drawn-on effects added throughout to enhance the experience. Achieved through photo printing and stop-motion techniques, the “Drugs” music video combines Sonnh’s artistic passions to execute a captivating visual component for this strong and memorable track.
