Rising Indie Folk Star Izzy Mahoubi Dives Deep in “Wanted”

The desire to be wanted is part of what makes us human. It is deeply ingrained in our DNA. In her latest single, “Wanted”, indie folk artist Izzy Mahoubi is diving deep into the contradictory feeling of wanting to be wanted by someone who couldn’t care less about you.

Mahoubi takes us through a journey in “Wanted." In the first verse she describes her man as a “back porch stoner” and says he “leaves like a cowboy but thinks he’s a soldier.” Despite these less than desirable characteristics Mahoubi acknowledges that she is still attracted to him.

In the second verse, Mahoubi has decided to cut herself free from this toxic relationship. She tells her friend of her plans but her friend isn’t convinced. Mahoubi recounts her friend’s reaction to her big news singing “She said ‘Izzy that’s fine and well / But we both know you can’t help yourself / and he raised the bar straight to hell / And you still want him.’”

By the third verse Mahoubi has realized her worth. She recalls the moment she was truly done with the relationship, singing “He called me on the telephone / To say that I should probably know I’m not falling in love with you / Just in case you thought so.” Mahoubi’s anger rises to the surface as she passionately sings “He said that shit like it was funny / Who the fuck says that to somebody / You kissed me first then call me honey / So yeah that’s my bad dog.”

Mahoubi’s recounting of this toxic relationship is accompanied by acoustic guitars and a chorus of additional voices. The song has a backyard party feel to it, and one can easily picture Mahoubi surrounded by her girlfriends as she spills all the details. With her vivid storytelling, Mahoubi paints an all too familiar picture of a toxic relationship, but with a touch of humor that shows she’s come out of the trauma relatively unscathed.
