We Are Deeply in Love With Role Model’s “Deeply Still In Love”

“Well, I heard you might've found somebody new / I still can't swallow it / But I think I'm proud of you.”

Over the course of his discography, ROLE MODEL has proven himself no stranger to writing a song about love. From “blind,” to “forever&more,” to the entirety of his debut album Rx, the 26-year-old indie-pop star has carefully crafted a discography centered around the meaningful relationships in his life… But what happens when one of those relationships suddenly comes to an end?

Today, ROLE MODEL has released his highly anticipated single “Deeply Still In Love,” and it only further highlights ROLE MODEL’s unique ability to pen a love story, even if it might be about a lover of the recent past.

This might be a hot take, but “Deeply Still In Love” cuts deeper than a downtrodden song about heartbreak because of the level of respect and emotional maturity ROLE MODEL demonstrates in his storytelling. While its contents are heavily implied in the title, “Deeply Still In Love” is ROLE MODEL’s open, honest, and optimistic confession to his ex-partner. While most breakup songs are filled with contempt and heartache, “Deeply Still In Love” is quite the opposite. ROLE MODEL lists the things he’s heard about his ex since the break up: she is sober now—perhaps she has found someone new—and how does ROLE MODEL respond? He says he’s proud of her.

Moments after, he admits, “Hey / Well, that's alright, I'll do better / Nothing lasts, always, forever / I wish I could pull it together, babe. (We’re not crying, you are…). While his songwriting is soul-baring, the soundscape of “Deeply Still In Love” is happier than ever. It’s one of those songs that you sing and dance along to, and then once you realize what you are singing along to, you want to cry. Upbeat drums and shimmering guitars accompany ROLE MODEL as he sings with a smile, up until the very last second where we are met with cryptic echoes and dusty keys that seem to reflect the reality of ROLE MODEL’s situation.

It isn’t a ROLE MODEL release without a ROLE MODEL music video, and the visuals for “Deeply Still In Love” take the track to the next level. We watch ROLE MODEL pull up to a bar—dusty cowboy boots and dirt-ridden Jeep intact—and wreak drunken, western havoc as he steals drinks, flirts with the cowgirls, and causes the local sheriffs to get involved in a bar fight. Directed by Dylan Knight and paying homage to Groundhog Day and Coyote Ugly, “Deeply Still In Love” is cowboy chaos at its finest.

“Deeply Still In Love” is ROLE MODEL’s second single release ahead of his sophomore album Kansas Anymore, slated for release July 19 via Interscope records.
