Stand Atlantic Turn Self-Sabotage Into Catharsis on “LUCID”| THE NOISE

Stand Atlantic have never been afraid to dig into the uncomfortable parts of growing up. Across their career, the Australian band has built a reputation for turning anxiety, frustration, and emotional contradictions into explosive alternative anthems. On their latest single “LUCID,” they channel that same intensity into a song about the moments when self-awareness and self-destruction collide.
The track arrives as the second preview of their upcoming fifth studio album GODBREATH, following the previously released “Velcro.” While that song explored the excitement and vulnerability of falling for someone, “LUCID” takes a more introspective approach, capturing the feeling of being stuck in cycles you know are hurting you.
Written toward the end of the album’s creative process, the track was born from vocalist Bonnie Fraser’s own burnout. Instead of forcing inspiration, Fraser leaned into the frustration and uncertainty she was experiencing, creating a song that feels refreshingly honest. “Every damn time I do this / Wide awake and lucid / Lifted up to get ruined,” she sings, reflecting the conflict between recognizing destructive patterns and still struggling to escape them.
“This was a hard track to figure out,” says vocalist Bonnie Fraser. “LUCID was one of the last songs we wrote for this record and I was kind of done. I felt like I was running out of things to say that wouldn’t feel super contrived. So I went plain and simple, I thought ‘I’m not going to overthink this, let’s go with what self-sabotage feels like’, and explored that lyrically.”
The band matches that emotional tension with pounding drums, sharp guitars, and Fraser’s commanding vocals. The track moves with a restless energy, capturing the feeling of pushing forward even when everything feels like it’s falling apart. Stand Atlantic have always balanced infectious hooks with heavier alternative influences, and here they use that contrast to make the song’s message hit even harder.
Rather than searching for a neat answer, “LUCID” finds power in sitting with the uncertainty. Fraser doesn’t frame self-sabotage as something easily defeated; instead, she captures the frustrating reality of recognizing your own patterns while still trying to break them. The result is a track that feels less like a breakdown and more like a moment of confrontation, where honesty becomes the first step toward change.
As Stand Atlantic enter their next era with GODBREATH, “LUCID” proves that their evolution comes from leaning further into honesty. By turning burnout into a rallying cry, the band delivers a track that feels both deeply personal and impossible not to scream along with.
