Walter The Producer Curates a Sound All His Own in 'No Substance Mixtape'

An eclectic mash of alt-indie and disco pop, Boston’s Walter The Producer introduces himself to the world in No Substance Mixtape, making a lasting mark by curating an impressively cohesive sound for someone only just arriving.

At 20 years old, much of Walter The Producer is an enigma. Producing, mixing, and mastering the project himself, his music is all we truly know of him, though luckily, it’s dense enough to glean a good picture. He has the ability to both feel deeply yet alchemize that emotion into funk, from soul-consuming yearning to heart-wrenching disappointment.

We open the project with “Both Of Us,” where he layers guitar over a groovy drum loop and hypnotically insidious vocals. Falling in love with producing at the young age of 13, you can hear a range of musical influences in No Substance Mixtape, from Anderson .Paak, to Toro y Moi, to Steve Lacy, though the final product of his work far precedes his age. He defies time and genre, making standstill music that will hold up no matter where it lands.

Previously released singles, including “Velma” and “Since September,” earned upwards of 600 thousand streams, setting the tone for the project and generating anticipation for exactly how Walter The Producer was going to emerge into the world. Just shy of 100 thousand monthly Spotify listeners, his name is settling into rooms, appearing on playlists like Lorem and All New Indie. But what’s most impressive is the amount of personal playlists he’s landed on that were curated by obscure indie lovers across the world, regarding him as their best-kept secret. Though it’s important to note, the emerging artist demands to not be gatekept.
