Derek Chan is an upcoming genre-bending singer songwriter, producer & multi-instrumentalist from Hong Kong. From a young age Derek was introduced to music through listening to classical records on his dad’s hi-fi system. He learned how to play the piano like the other kids. However, unlike most, Derek was more drawn to the idea of creating his own melodies and expressing his creative mind rather than memorising what was put in front of him. That’s when he ditched the piano exams and picked up the guitar and learned how to write his own music. Before long, he also learned how to produce. Music quickly became his way to build the world that he always imagined. Growing up in an international school in Hong Kong and having moved to different cities such as Sydney, New York and Toronto during various stages of his life, he was always exposed to different cultures and music. Along with the help of the internet, Derek was able to craft a sound that mixes ideas from classical, punk-rock, soul and hip-hop creating a new sound that is uniquely his. Having written for some big names such as Doughboy & Justin Lo, Derek continues to grow as his own artist and garner support from listeners across Asia and beyond.
