Ashe Wants Forever With Her Partner On New Single "Funeral"

First comes love, then comes marriage, and then — your funeral? Okay, so it might not sound romantic when you put it like that, but Ashe’s latest single, “Funeral,” makes “til death do us part” sound like the sweetest sound you’ve ever heard.
Coming hot off the heels of her biggest solo debut to date (“Stop The Wedding!,” an ABBA-esque ode to running as fast as you can from the wrong relationship), “Funeral” starts as a simple piano ballad, with Ashe describing a partner that made her feel “safe for the very first time.”
“I’m at the beginning and the end // my forever, now and then,” she sings as the song works up to its denouement: that this partner will be “the last speech at my funeral.”
“Funeral”’s production stays simple, with the piano and acoustic guitar letting the song’s moving lyrics shine. A horn section towards the climax of the track makes this rumination on death sound like a celebration of life as Ashe urges her lover to “make it good // tell ‘em about how we met.”
“The best thing I ever did // was loving you,” Ashe sings as the song closes out. Painfully earnest — and absolutely gorgeous.
The single is part of Ashe’s latest album, The Girl of Your Dreams, due out October 16. The singer has pointed to throwback artists like ABBA, The Beach Boys, The Beatles, and Queen as inspirations for the project, so expect plenty more glittery pop songs and touching lyrics.
“I’m having a better time than I’ve ever had making a record and releasing a record,” Ashe revealed in a press release.
Reflecting on forever can be frightening, especially when it comes to romance, but Ashe’s “Funeral” is a beautiful meditation on how, with the right person, the end doesn’t sound that scary after all.
