Becca Means Reflects on Love Lost With Anthemic Debut Single “My Darling”

Who among us can say that they have lived a life free from toxic relationships plagued by poor communication and uncertainty? Sadly it would seem that this experience is all but universal, but what is more tragic is that many of those scorned by love lack the ability to communicate just how bruised their spirit has become, and just how hardened their trauma has left them.

Enter Becca Means, an LA-based singer-songwriter and producer who makes her grand introduction this week with her debut single “My Darling”. A sage of romantic tension, cyclical misery, and everything in between, Means’ “debut” is perhaps merely nominal; she’s accrued a staggering social presence over the past year blessing early listeners with covers and demos, and finally, she’s delivering fans her first of many long-awaited singles. At only 19 years old, “My Darling” sees the young pop prodigy reflecting on a love that has reached its inevitable conclusion, but while many of us would be wrought with confusion and longing, Means approaches the situation with wisdom and clarity beyond her years.

It is hard to deny that “My Darling” is an anthem, a cathartic display of powerful pop stylistics paired with a razor-sharp bite, honed through clever writing and unyielding candor. Sonically, she may exist somewhere in the liminal space between Olivia Rodrigo and Lexi Jayde, but what separates Means from her peers is an undeniable affinity for blending pop’s vintage and modern tropes. “My Darling” is undoubtedly nostalgic and sentimental, but instead of relying on old and time-tested sounds to capture listeners’ attention, Means arms herself with a unique retro-futurism that is practically bursting at the seams with limitless charm and potential.

Originally intended to be a love song, “My Darling” alchemically shifted towards something far more complex following Means’ own experiences with toxic romance. Her pain was not for nothing, as she was luckily able to channel her energy into writing and co-producing one of the strongest artist debuts we’ve seen this year. With more music slated for release in the near future, Means is nothing if not an artist to watch.
