BIZZY Dances Around Love and Heartbreak in Two New Singles [Q&A]

With a host of riveting singles released over the past twelve months, Nashville-based, Maryland transplant BIZZY is clearly honing in on an approachable, story-forward sound, bridging singer-songwriter and pop sensibilities that started with her first viral single "Anybody." Wanting to know more about her upcoming music, dating life, and where to eat in her adopted town, we reached out to get a little less dizzy on BIZZY.

Ones To Watch: Who is BIZZY?

Bizzy: I got the nickname 'BIZZY' from my dad when I was about two years old. I was constantly running around the house like a little psychopath who could never sit still. I would say BIZZY is the most vulnerable and authentic version of me. When someone calls me BIZZY it takes me right back to when I was young. BIZZY is someone who leads with her heart and tries to see the world from a child-like point of view.

What is "Out Loud" all about?

Love this story!! "Out Loud" is about a boy I’ve known since the fourth grade. I had the BIGGEST crush on him throughout middle school. We always had kind of a back-and-forth thing in high school, until we both got significant others. We stayed friends throughout college, and it just so happened that we broke up with our then-partners around the same time. We reconnected when he was in Nashville for the weekend, and things kind of took off from there. We’d been talking for a couple of months, and my friends would ask how it was going. I would always answer with “oh it’s fun, but I’m honestly not sure how I feel about him.” That is, until a few months later. I was sitting in my kitchen with my friend, and she again asked “ok soooo, how’s it going?” and I immediately said without thinking, “I think I’m in love with him!” I kid you not, we both stopped and audibly GASPED, because I genuinely didn’t realize I felt that way until I said it out loud (LOL). I immediately wrote that concept down in my notes app, and brought the idea into my write the following day, and that’s how "Out Loud" came to be.

And now how about telling about "I'd Never Tell You?"

Hahah, yeah this one isn’t as fun to tell but I’ll spill the tea anyway :) I was at work, (I used to be a waitress at a Mexican restaurant), and I had been seeing this guy for a couple months. We had plans to hang out that night, and I got a text in the middle of my shift from him. I opened it expecting it to be about what the plan was for that night, but instead it was this PARAGRAPH (I mean you had to scroll) message about how he really liked me but was just too busy to keep hanging out. I was BUMMEDDD! And to make it even worse, right after getting that text, I went to the kitchen to get my next order and bring it out and on my way to the table I dumped the ENTIRE tray of food on a family, like I’m talking the baby was covered in rice. It really just topped my day off. I went to respond to the text, and instead of saying how I really felt, I responded with something like “all good! no sweat!” Because god forbid I let him hurt my pride—and then proceeded to go cry in my boss's office. The next week, I had a write with Suzie Buist and Alexander Frieden. The moment I walked in, I grabbed a guitar and started singing exactly how I felt, which was everything that I wish I had the guts to say to him. And that’s how “I’d Never Tell You” was born.

Why did you decide to release two singles at once?

I decided to release both of these songs together because it feels like they are the Yin to the other’s Yang. They are polar opposites, but somehow fit so well together. I also feel like they paint the FULL picture of what love really is. It’s not always just rainbows and butterflies—sometimes it’s really really hard and scary. This way, everybody has a song to listen to depending on where they are in their relationship—whether that’s heartbreak summer or summer lovin’!!

Any collaborators? Who produced the tracks?

Yes, both songs I had collaborators on! “Out Loud” I wrote with Dave Villa and Maddy Simmen, who are both SO INCREDIBLE! Dave also produced the song! I wrote "I’d Never Tell You" with Suzie Buist and Alexander Frieden, who are also AMAZING and magical to write with! Alexander and Brandon Meagher produced the song.

Have you landed on your sound yet? Can we expect more of this style in the future?

I feel like I would be lying if I said I’ve found my sound, because I think it’s always going to change. But I feel like I’ve gotten to a place where every song I write feels like ME, and that’s really all I care about.

Besides this excellent two-pack release, what else should we be on the lookout for?

LOTS MORE MUSIC :)) Maybe even a chunk of it ;)

What's inspiring you right now outside of music?

The biggest thing that always inspires me is nature. I feel like there is always something to be learned and discovered. It’s so amazing to me that every single animal and insect on earth has so much purpose.

What are your must-eat recommendations in Nashville?

Ooo, my favorite restaurants in Nashville are Burger Up (their fries are to DIE FOR) and this Thai place called Lemon Grass (which I just found out is a chain, but it’s still AMAZING)

Who are your Ones To Watch?

I have so many artists I’m loving right now. I think my top three are Chappell Roan, Tommy Lefroy and Sam MacPherson.
