chlothegod Refuses to Be Defined in Sophomore EP 'I Feel Different Every Day'
After months of anticipation, the time has finally come. chlothegod has released her sophomore EP, I Feel Different Every Day, and it is EVERYTHING. The record is an emotional and honest look into the artist's evolving psyche and artistry. Following the success of her 2023 debut EP Nearly Straight, this new body of work showcases her growth as an artist and amplifies her ability to blend vulnerability with razor-sharp wit and fearless experimentation across seven stellar tracks.
"I Feel Different Every Day is what happens when an oversharer is trusted with a secret," shared the artist. It's a raw, vulnerable sharing of the past and an attempt not to burst at the seams. I had tearful sessions with Mike (Irish, Executive Producer of the EP), crying about how I feel outside of my family and outside of my own life, and the next day would be a wild session of joy with my best friends as we shared screenshots of exes. I'm so excited to share my ever-changing experience of being a human with a mic glued to her mouth."
The record opens with "I Know What Everyone Says About Me," which starts as an emotional ballad with a minimalistic, acoustic arrangement, allowing chlo's vocals to stand center stage and shine. With almost a minute left, the track switches gears, and chlo takes back the narrative explored throughout the song. Before the change, the song is at a slow tempo and discusses how chlo is aware of what people may be saying about her. After the break, she's reclaiming her power, fully proving everyone wrong. She exclaims, "I gave up so much, but not the regret." This track is a testament to chlo's resilience, making it a strong opener that perfectly sets up what's to come.
"Why Would I" sees chlo call out an ex-lover, or perhaps a friend, we can only guess as reggae-esque sonics weave in and out of her infectious vocals, highlighting how effortlessly the rising star blends genres to create something fresh. She holds nothing back, confronting them in the most intellectual way possible with lyrics like, "Promise I could give a fuck about your true intentions, let's keep it elementary / You weren't there when I needed you to be," holding no punches. This is a realization that she was the one who was wronged and is in the right to be PISSED. This track, with its rich, sonic landscape, is a candid expression of chlo's feelings, making it one of the standout moments of the EP.
The title track is a peaceful, ruminative piece about chlo's upbringing and her relationship with herself. The listener looks into her mind as she sings lyrics like, "Deleting pictures because something's missing." Then, in true chlothegod fashion, there's an unexpected switch-up where she shifts the beat toward the end, belting in raw, powerful vocals, "Where's my guardian angel? Where's my seat at the table?" This evolution in lyrics and sound amplifies the raw emotions and angst at the core of the track and the record overall.
The record finale, "Stuck In My Ways," is a lovely acoustic effort that opens with warm, bright sonics and soft vocals. chlothegod counters expectations with cynical lyrics like, "If I had one wish, I'd wish for a car to run you over." This kind of juxtaposition enhances the impact of her message as she explores the feeling of being mentally or physically stuck. Yet, she finds strength in it, reflecting on the passage of time, and begs for more letdowns and late nights. It's simply stunning.
