Clairo Pens a Tender Tale of Solitude in “Nomad”

Thank you Clairo, we all say in unison.

When we needed her most, Clairo returned and gifted the world with “Nomad,” the introductory track to her upcoming album, Charm. “Nomad,” alongside the previous single and second project track “Sexy To Someone,” introduces us to the world of Charm, and it is nothing short of magical.

While, melodically, “Nomad” sounds whimsical and so very tender, it is a track to be handled with care. Through poignant lyricism paired with timeless, stripped-back production “Nomad” speaks to the human experiences of connection and loneliness, and how inextricably intertwined the two are. In the first verse, Clairo admits to feeling shameless, obsessed, and touch-starved, and—in far more poetic prose—ultimately decides that she would rather be heartbroken by someone than having never known them at all. Clairo weighs this fantasy against one of solitude, singing, “That I’d rather be alone than a stranger / You’d come visit me late at night / I’d rather wake up alone than be reminded / Of how it was a dream this time.” In some ways, “Nomad” feels like that one friend who looks pretty when they cry. It’s melancholic, but also kind of beautiful.

Sonically, “Nomad” feels Sling-adjacent, emphasizing folky woodwinds and finger-picked guitars to create a sound that echoes a desire to be nomadic. While listening to the track, I immediately thought of Thelma and Louise, Americana, a deer frolicking through a field, and above all: a safe space. Paired with Clairo’s calming vocals, “Nomad” makes for a listen that is just as organic as it is complex.

“Nomad” and “Sexy To Someone” prove that the return of Clairo has been well worth the wait. Through the clever songwriting of "Nomad" and the groovy, punchy production of “Sexy To Someone,” Charm is already demonstrating Clairo’s versatility, growth, and maturity as an artist.

11 days until Charm, but who’s counting?
