Hazlett's "doing my best" Is a Simple Yet Powerful Affirmation

Being a human is hard. Responsibilities flood in from all directions. Commitments to friends and family conflict with commitments to work, which in turn conflict with commitments to yourself. It builds up and sometimes all you can do is your best. Rising indie folk artist Hazlett is no stranger to doing his best, and reflects on this in his new single “doing my best.”

Hazlett pours his heart out over acoustic guitar, drums, and layered harmonies. The singer’s voice is tender and vulnerable, just like the lyrics. In the chorus, Hazlett sings, “I’m okay but I’m kind of upset / Told my mum I’m doing my best / It’s too late to go and get rest / So I’m gonna live in my head.” Layered voices singing “oh no” build up the end of the chorus before the beginning of the second verse, which is more mellow. The whole song ebbs and flows in its intensity, almost like a wave, and sometimes that’s exactly what doing your best feels like. One day your best can be knocking everything off of your to-do list and the next day your best can simply be getting out of bed and brushing your teeth.

When first announcing the song and new era on social media, Hazlett reflected on the craziness of the last two years of his career, writing, “I think sometimes I still forget the whole reason I stumbled into music was because it was my outlet to put words down and figure things out in my head. So that’s what I’ve been doing. Navigating. Wondering. Searching. Trying to see what’s next for all of this”

“doing my best” is not only Hazlett’s first release of 2025 but also marks the beginning of a new era for the Australian artist. We can’t wait to see what else this new era brings.
