Hear Softcult Soothe the Soul With Calming New Single "Spiralling Out"| THE NOISE

Canadian duo Softcult transcend expectations with the release of their latest single, "Spiralling Out." Instead of channeling the goth or grunge sonic touchstones they have become known for, they opt for brighter, dreamier tones reminiscent of The Beatles or the Beach Boys while maintaining their heart-on-the-sleeve lyricism.

The sheer and heady single opens with beautifully fluid rhythm guitar riffs that anchor the listener amid the beautifully woven soundscape the siblings have crafted. In the chorus, they croon their condolences to any listener dealing with anxiety, asking them, "Is it worth the pain for now?/ Is it worth it to find out?/ Don't wanna be the air you breathe out/ Breathe out." Overall, "Spiralling Out" is like an audible warm hug that comforts the listener with its heart-aching yet hopeful lyrics and intricate, collagey intsrumentals.

"We wrote this song about those times when we ruminate over a situation over and over again to no end," shared the duo. "Sometimes, it feels like there's no amount of self-talk that can get us out of that spiral. It feels like everything is out of control, and the world is like a carnival ride spinning all around us, but we are paralyzed and unable to step on or off. Hopefully, this song is one that lets other people who struggle with anxiety know that they aren't alone, and we can also relate to how they feel and that they have the ability to step into their power and take it back."

The accompanying self-directed music video is a mesmerizing visual filmed on a carousel while on tour in Seattle, WA. The sisters entrance the listener with the video's dreamy aesthetic and moody production while quite literally giving themselves motion sickness in the process. Mercedes adds, "Motion was a huge factor in the music video. I wanted to evoke the feeling of being pulled into an anxious spiral. I wanted to recreate the feeling of the world spinning out of control around you. We used any means of motion that we could find: a Merry-Go-Round that physically made us sick after filming, a carousel in Seattle on tour, etc. We actually gave ourselves motion sickness filming this video."

"Spiralling Out" will be featured on the band's upcoming EP Heaven, out May 24. The new record promises to call attention to the contradiction of a society obsessed with the afterlife. Over its six tracks, Heaven further extends Softcult's eclectic and wide-ranging sonic universe with elements of shoe gaze, grunge, riot-grrrl, and pop.
