Jack Kane Finds Heartbreak By the Milk in “Breaking Up At The Department Store” [Q&A]

We chase those sparkles, these shimmers of light across platforms and mediums, and yes, maybe, we have a sequence of a few of our extra outfits. If that level of melodrama and excess feels right to you, then upcoming crooner Jack Kane is a perfect emotional outfit to add to your next fashionable breakdown, breakup, or freakout. In his latest single, “Breaking Up At The Department Store,” Kane adds a little venom to his humor, or vice versa, and takes us through a very detailed bad day. Wanting to dig into such a startling song title, we reached out to hear about future love songs, coffee orders, and what else he has cooking.

OnesToWatch: Who is Jack Kane?

Jack Kane: A Hertfordshire-based artist, who is inspired by music you would probably find on CDs in your dad’s glove compartment.

Did you really break up at the department store?

Never permanently! But I have had countless arguments in places like department stores, the kind of arguments where you’re desperately trying to keep your voices down and not let anyone else know that you’re seething, where the whole discussion takes place through your teeth as a kind of venomous whisper, where you storm off and have to wait by the milk for five minutes to calm down.

We love your voice, when did you know you had that singer in you?

My sister actually forced me to sing. She went to an arts school and I really wanted to go to the same school as her, but you had to audition. So she forced me to sing “I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz and I got halfway through the verse and she said “WHAT?!! you can sing!”.

Any collaborators? Who produced the single?

This first single was produced by Hoost. This was the first song we had worked on together and it was the smoothest writing/production session I’ve ever had. I’m pretty sure he’s always that good but it was one of those days where I felt so open with ideas whilst Hoost was carving the sickest track I’ve ever heard. I wrote the lyrics in about 45 minutes. I've never listened to my own demo as much as I’ve listened to this.

Are you afraid of love songs, or is it pure therapy for you?

I love ‘love songs’ man, every now and again I’ll write a straight-on-the-nose ‘I love you’ song. I think usually I’ll gravitate towards something a little edgier, or even a love song with some kind of dark spin on it, but sometimes you just can't beat a classic love song. "Just The Way You Are," "Wonderful Tonight," "Eternal Flame," I mean, come on!

Can we expect more of this style in the future?

For the foreseeable future, absolutely! I have more songs I want to put out very soon, that go alongside "Breaking Up At The Department Store." This whole next EP is a real amalgamation of all my influences, and very reflective of the kind of music I’ve been listening to this past year.

Besides this excellent single, what else should we be on the lookout for?

I’m going on tour! My first-ever headline tour of the UK and Ireland from the 4th til the 11th of April, if you’re around, come! I’m hoping to release another single around tour time too! I also want to start a kind of creative community, where maybe once a month, friends/fans/anyone can come and share what they’ve been working on and get in the room/on the Zoom feedback, and also make contacts with other creatives.

What's inspiring you right now outside of music?

I’m getting so deep into a cooking hole. Whenever I’m not doing music I’m usually thinking about what I can eat next. I really like the presentation of food, I think it’s in some way a form of self-care, I’ve never been able to be consistent with any form of self-care, like meditation or exercise, but with cooking, I actually really enjoy it. I’m currently eight iterations into a pizza dough recipe, it's still not quite right but it's getting closer!

Coffee order right after you break up with us?

Ooh post breakup coffee… black americano, two sugars. I would’ve said iced, but I think you want the warmth for a bit of comfort, straight espresso so you don’t fall into a pit of sadness, and the sugar so you’re not too bitter about it.

Who are your ones to watch?

I went to a really cool gig the other night, BLUEGIRL who has produced a few of my soon-to-be-released songs was supporting an artist called Déyyess, and both of them absolutely killed it. The way they have both cultivated a fanbase of passionate listeners is so inspiring to see, the music is wicked and the performances were sick too. So both of them for sure!
