Jean Dawson Pens a Love Letter to Every First-Generation Wanderer With 'Boohoo'

An ode to his Latinx roots and a love letter to every first-generation wanderer finding home within two worlds, Mexican-American alternative pop visionary Jean Dawson returns with Boohoo, an overture to his new album slated to be released in the hopefully near future. Boohoo also has the distinction of featuring his first ever fully Spanish track, “Divino Desmadre.”

If there is one thing Dawson continues to prove, it’s his affinity for shapeshifting and discomfort with stagnancy. “Divino Desmadre” is a wide step outside of his comfort zone, a love song penned entirely in Spanish. With subtle notes of corrido layered under a soft alternative beat, there is no better place to debut “Divino Desmadre” than Mexico’s Ceremonia Festival in late March, bringing it all back home and honoring the roots that allowed his stardom to bloom.

The song is also accompanied by “New Age Crisis” and “Taste Like Metal.” The former feels like sonic panic, a brash and overstated becoming that stands as one of his most impressive tracks to date. The latter is a moody symphony, a fallen angel confessing to his crash landing.

Beyond the obvious, Boohoo is palpable proof that Dawson is only getting better with time, and that we don’t have much of a choice but to pay attention.
