Juliana Madrid Is Accepting Probable Fate in 'Lifetime' EP [Q&A]

It’s been a hot, possibly godless summer for us all, but if you want a Brat diversion that welcomes warm notes and classic harmonies, then “Lifetime” by New York-transplant Juliana Madrid is for you. Known for intensely vibrant lyrics and layered songwriting, Juliana’s latest is a bookclub of emotions, a place to curl up and contemplate the deep dissonance within. Pesky as always, we wanted to peek into this singer's musical closet, so we put paper to pen to ask, what’s been happening this lifetime:

OnesToWatch: Beside possibly being a heathen… who is “Juliana Madrid”?

Juliana Madrid: I am just a girl. 23 just moved to New York extremely confused about life but so in love with the earth and art and will create until the day I die.

What is ‘Lifetime’ all about?

It’s about relationships and it’s about me and it’s about having so much hope for the future while at the same time accepting ur more probable fate.

How did your EP come together? Did you go all “Big Pink” retreat?

It came together at a writing camp upstate, got to meet a bunch of really cool artists and work on songs I’ve had on the back burner for a while also creating new ones. It was the best time.

Any collaborations or features? Who produced the EP?

My producer Ben Ruttner produced the entire EP, with some co-productions from Maggie Rogers, James Flannigan, and co writers Claire Cottril, Joe P, Maggie, Justin Hayward-young, and Chelsea Cutler.

How do you feel your sound has evolved or changed since your last EP Afterlife?

Every record my taste evolves and changes and I think this record just embodies where I’m at right now and the kinda music I needed to make for myself in that moment.

How many lives have you lived lyrically? Can we expect more of this thematically going forward?

Like so many. And maybe 👀

Besides this excellent EP, what else should we be on the lookout for?

More shows n tours and a new album some day!

What's inspiring you right now outside of music?

Dancing and moving my body in a way that makes me feel hot

To really “hear” the EP best, where do I go to listen? If anything what am I doing?

Literally anywhere but preferably live because I am really good live.

Musically who is new but making all the right moves? Who are your current OnesToWatch?

Obviously Chappell Roan literally no one else compares right now. Not even close.
