Kaelin Ellis Takes Us Through His Project ‘You Are Here, Start.’ Track By Track

A very select number of current artists really test your sound system, or at the very least make you wish you had the most optimal speaker setup to appreciate, but Kaelin Ellis does just that, he’s a musician created for high fidelity. While most R&B and hip-hop of late is mid-maxed, hyper-condensed, and begging for algorithmic adds, Kaelin constructs a journey, a swagger-filled party bus of beats and synths that make you slow down and actually listen. Wanting to know more from this Lakeland, FL-based artist, we dusted off our record player vibes and asked the man himself how he put together such a triumph of an album.

"Monologue"

I had this idea of starting with a poem that Moody Bank$ help me write. I felt like I sat with those words for probably six months, we both finished it with the sonics from Discord member mo gratitude.

"Shine"

I made this record with Duckwrth and Lophiile over Zoom and I stayed on call with them after starting the initial idea. it sounds more jazzier than the original version, but it was a fun jam we played around with.

"Cycles/Masterpiece"

This was the last and most recent record of the album, I made it at the beginning of 2023 and Iman mentioned she wrote something for it, that original idea called Cycles became “masterpiece.” This version has a new third verse and I'm happy with how it turned out.

"Heart"

This was from another session I did in 2020 over Zoom with lophiile and Saba. We worked on the beat and what came of it was this record. Me and Moody Bank$ did some backing vocals for the record, and I revisited the drums for this right before the album needed to be turned in.

"Ain't you mad"

This was from a beat I made in 2021 for Guapdad 4000, it was hilarious to discover bBddy and Kenny got a verse on it. It almost didn't end up on the project

 "Celebration"

This was another record that was made back in 2020 and the missile idea was sent to Anomalie and essentially I had a hard drive failure and thought I lost the song. I managed to find those stems at the end of 2023 and I hit up one of my good friends TOBi back in 2021 to revisit the idea.

"Platinum"

This was from another session. I did back in 2021 on my first Official trip in LA and I gave this beat that has been sitting on my hard drive since 2017 to JAHMED. I was super stoked to see him right over this record, he even performs it live sometimes

"It’s been a minute"

This was made during 2022 and it features a lot of my old house from my SoundCloud era.

 "Mercy"

This was also a record I made in a jam session with CS and Luisa out in 2021.

 "I Spent Time Away"

This beat was made during 2021 as well  the entire project was made from a collection of ideas that I've held on to for years and now they have a chance to help others
