kat cordova Finds the Whimsy in Romantic Confusion in “Fall on My Sword”
Los Angeles-based independent singer-songwriter kat cordova’s “Fall on My Sword” is her fifth ever single. The indie pop song, which we stumbled upon on TikTok via a y2k-medieval aesthetic edit, is about the confusion of being with someone you know isn’t right for you. Co-produced with Charlie Hickey, the production is heavily inspired by the likes of Oklou, MUNA, The Japanese House and other experimental pop artists.
Having lived in Northern California, the Central Coast, and now LA, kat cordova is heavily inspired by the landscapes she grew up in, and often interweaves her physical surroundings into her personal and intimate lyrics that focus on the “details often gone unseen or unspoken.”
Lyrically, the song is in line with kat’s typical colorful imagery with punchy hooks. The chorus is where this part of kat’s style really comes through. It’s catchy, whimsical, and draws listeners in to the rest of the song effortlessly. Against the production, it’s able to give the track a bright center without losing the tension at its core. Her introversion, kat says, lends to her imagination, and creating worlds inside her head often leads her to whimsical storytelling.
She takes sonic inspiration from all genres, creating a musical hybrid that has a strong lyrical focus, yet still leads with experimental production. In “Fall on My Sword,” there are vocal effects, layering of unconventional sounds, and synths mixed with the classics of bedroom pop.
“Fall on My Sword” is the lead single from an EP kat cordova is set to release this fall, offering a first glimpse into the world she is continuing to build as a new face in indie-pop.
