LAUNDRY DAY Begs the All-Important Question in New Single "Why is everyone a DJ?”

LAUNDRY DAY’s latest single, “Why is everyone a DJ?,” is an equally earnest and playful track perfectly representing this jokester group of high school friends hailing from New York City. LAUNDRY DAY came to life in 2016, and 8 years later, Jude, Sawyer, Henry, and Henry have since independently released three albums and two EPs, alongside cross-country tours and festivals. The years since their musical beginnings have only expanded LAUNDRY DAY’s creativity tenfold, and now, in 2024, they’ve brought their cheeky personalities to social media, rejuvenating their audience with fresh faces. This recent single brings the boys closer to project number six, and translates their beloved online goofiness to their music, as well.

“Why is everyone a DJ?” builds around a dirty guitar sound, buzzing with the finessed ambience of amp overdrive. Gang vocals shout over the strumming, invoking the youthful rebellion of a Beastie Boys-type NYC spirit. The title lyrics nod to the sudden influx of Gen Z DJers infiltrating the city, both a teasing and relevant sentiment. “Why is everyone a DJ? / My grandma used to spin to Motown, and I bet she looked pretty / I could use a hundred dollars right now,” sings the band. With its polished DIY sound, the song exudes basement show energy from every pore without sacrificing the musical acuity of the band.

This chorus section then shifts into a smoother groove, shimmering with electric piano chords and vocal layers. LAUNDRY DAY levels out the previous irony with this newfound vulnerability, traversing sweet melodies. They flow us back and forth between these complementary sounds, infusing a decorative glint of autotune here and a '70s arena rock guitar there for a chaotically colorful palette.

Leaping off the internet’s excited embrace of their boyish charm and class clown friendships, “Why is everyone a DJ?” feels like an authentic first single for LAUNDRY DAY’s next era.
