Lumia Is Making Dance Music For the Afters and Girls [Q&A]

When the caffeine and whatever other concoctions we strive on aren’t quite enough, sometimes we need a genuine dose of heart-accelerating tunes, a beat with melodic breadth to acerbate the work day or the twilight hours to follow. In "My Boy," the latest single from amazing up-and-coming artist and DJ Lumia, she delivers the perfect soundtrack for those cut through traffic, chase down that cab, and get to the cross-town rendezvous moment that litter life. Fascinated by her excellent art direction and curious about this young producer's take on dance music, we fired some questions her way to dig into this savvy world builder.

OnesToWatch: Who is Lumia?

Lumia: I’m an artist and DJ from New York.

Your creative and art direction smashes, is that all you?

I’ve been working with my older brother, Jason Nocito. It’s awesome.

What would you describe your sound as?

Electronic, house. Dance music for the afters, music for the girls.

Any big, obvious inspirations that helped you get here?

I grew up surrounded by a lot of strong women! My older sister has definitely influenced my experience with music.

How, if at all, does your heritage relate to your artist self?

Growing up in New York has really shaped me and inspired my creative. I think my mother’s traditional Chinese values definitely instilled a strong work ethic.

What is "My Boy" all about?

It’s about a boy who really really loved to party.

Any collaborators? You produced the track?

Yes! I made it with my friend Graydon, he’s really talented and fun to work with.

Besides this excellent single, what else should we be on the lookout for?

My next single "Heartache"s is out this month, and my EP will be out in June!

What is the best dish to fuel your dancing all night excess?

Pizza is my favorite food.

Who are your ones to watch?

Mckgee, Oklou, Sam Austins!
