Pop singer margø is coming out swinging with new album THIS IS NOT A PARTY SONG, BABY IT’S A THREAT! The project is a bold, brash collection of songs that show off the artist’s self-confidence.

margø begins the album with “whisper,” a shots-fired sort of anthem where she “mean[s] all the district” leveled at her opps and declares, “This shit aint a party song // baby, it’s a threat.” The industrial pop production lends weight to her breezy bragging, creating a dark and danceable track.

Much of the album takes aim at less-than-satisfactory lovers, whether it’s the “silly boy” with a “hollow” heart on “what a waste!” or “dirty laundry,” where margø tells her partner, “I’m not your mommy // go pick up your dirty laundry.”

The project’s production is heavy, with unrelenting bass and synths, steady drums, and hyperpop style that give the songs a sound all their own. You can also hear echoes of other artists — Melanie Martinez-style nursery rhyme cadences are present on “lovesick” and “bang bang!,” while “double dare” sounds like a lost track from Britney Spears’ Circus.

While most of THIS IS NOT A PARTY SONG, BABY IT’S A THREAT! focuses on margø’s relationship woes, she’s also willing to admit she brings her own issues to the table when it comes to love. “obsessed” and “bad omen” see the artist own up to her own obsessive tendencies, as she declares on the former, “I can’t give you up, I can't get enough.”

In a statement posted to Instagram, margø explained, “this album is about being angry!!! and looking back at your younger self and knowing you deserved better!!! it’s about being loud and taking up space and not ever ever ever letting anyone make you feel small!! I love these songs with my whole heart and healed a lot while making it and I hope these songs remind you that you deserve to embrace all of your weirdness and beauty and flaws.”

Whether she’s taking a swing at a lover that didn’t know what they had, or boldly declaring what she wants from a relationship, margø’s THIS IS NOT A PARTY SONG, BABY IT’S A THREAT! is all about having the confidence to go after what you want — and get rid of what you don’t.
