MARIS Delivers a Debut Anthem of Cosmic Proportions With "Heavenly Bodies"

MARIS doesn't hold back her feelings in her debut single, "Heavenly Bodies." The track is an explosive anthem that shows off the singer's impeccable vocal range and deeply vulnerable lyrics, making it the perfect song for listeners to blast when battling heartache.

"Heavenly Bodies" opens with a swirling blend of warm guitar riffs, celestial beats, and echoey vocal effects. MARIS expresses that there's so much changing around her and searches for divine intervention. A longing in her voice grows as the swirling instrumentation on the pre-chorus builds. She sings, "You live in Venus / I really mean this / Don't tell me you need space," before launching into a passionate chorus begging her love interest to stay close to her.

"When I was in high school, I was in love with a girl who had a boyfriend," she shared in an Instagram reel. "We were like best friends that were more than best friends to me. I wasn't doing any of that stuff with my other best friends. So during 2020, I had to go home and live in Montana for a little while, so I was constantly going through my old memories and artifacts. It made me think about this relationship, and I really wanted to capture that yearning but also that explosive feeling when she finally did want me, when she finally validated me. I think we did it."

"Heavenly Bodies" further shows off the singer's range with impressive vocal ad-libbing and mesmerizing instrumentation that only helps to play into the song's cosmic themes and wordplay. "I make music as a form of expression, but also out of necessity," confesses Maris. "Ever since I was little, music has been something that means home to me, and I hope that my music has made you feel any kind of connection or emotion. That's another thing that is so important to me about music: connection. I value the communication within art so deeply, and so I hope you like my music at least a fraction as much as I love making it."
