Mk.gee Drifts Gently Into the Atmospheric Haze of "Lonely Fight"

Mk.gee’s latest single, “Lonely Fight,” is an artful addition to the indie-alt visionary’s already timeless discography. It falls perfectly in step with the soulful pace of Two Star & The Dream Police but delves even further into his profound depth of sound.

A notable decoration in the world of “Lonely Fight” is the tangible atmosphere Mk.gee builds. Listeners are enveloped by a dusting of white noise, hissing like a true '80s vinyl record. The main synth has a warm buzz as it glides alongside the guitar, both instruments living somewhere between the soul of acoustic and the drive of electric.

It’s the uncluttered, yet ornate arrangement that really propels Mk.gee in his own lane. Though the heart of “Lonely Fight” is the main synth and guitar, there are lilting accents that shape the soundscape. Mk.gee adds faraway runs of brass melodies and a bass where you can almost hear the thrum of fingers on strings. His voice is laden with intentional reverb, melting into the background vocals when they swell onto the track, smooth and orchestral. Rounding it all out, the drums tick crisply, doing just enough to lay the foundation of percussion to the song.

Woven together, these embellishments give “Lonely Fight” that classic feel Mk.gee is revered for. There are pulses of Eric Clapton in the gliding guitar licks and effortless groove, but Mk.gee’s laced his sound with something singular, an instinct entirely his own. “Lonely Fight” is another expansion of his grounded artistry, one we will continue to watch as it unfolds.
