Holly Humberstone and MUNA Add an Infectious Dance-Pop Flair to “Into Your Room”

“You’re the center of this universe, my sorry ass revolves around you.”

This year, our latest zine cover star Holly Humberstone released her highly anticipated debut album: Paint My Bedroom Black. Across 13 tracks, Humberstone paints a coming-of-age portrait of fame and loneliness, making for an introspective, honest, and emotionally cathartic body of work. With each song, Humberstone unlocks specific moments of her past in an effort to start off on a clean, new slate. There is one song that hits ever-so-slightly harder than the rest —“Into Your Room”—and today, Humberstone has joined forces with pop-trio MUNA to reimagine the dreamy, melodramatic tune into something just as foreign as it is familiar.

“Into Your Room” is a sad bop; it’s one of those songs that you catch yourself singing and dancing along to, and then you realize what the song is actually about, and suddenly, you are contemplating all of your life’s decisions up until that very point. The song tells the tale of a one-sided love that once was; speaking to Humberstone’s personal experience of being on the road and unable to give her loved ones the time and energy they deserved. The songwriting captures the guilt of not being there for someone when they needed you most, while simultaneously trying to make up for lost time, as Humberstone sings, “I'm throwing stones at your window, To get you to notice me / Don't make me stand outsidе, in the pouring rain.” Humberstone wears her heart on her sleeve, but sometimes, everything you have to offer just isn’t quite enough.

On this 2.0 version of “Into Your Room,” MUNA infiltrates the instrumentals to add their signature indie-pop flair, decorating the track in shimmering synths and punchy guitars that feel like sunlight shining through a window. Katie Gavin’s vocals seamlessly accompany the dance-pop production, creating a harmonious blend between MUNA’s traditional poppy sound and Humberstone’s alternative roots. Gavin and Humberstone share the mic for the final chorus; in a way, reimagining and redefining “Into Your Room” as a little less lonely—and perhaps a little more hopeful —of a tune.
