Nokio's "city on fire" Is A Love Letter to Music Itself

Artist evolution is always exciting and when it sounds as good as the debut single from nokio, the new project from the artist formerly known as Jae Luna, we’re all in. The self-produced, genre-spanning single is titled “city on fire” and takes listeners on a journey, sonically and spiritually.

Towing the line of indie, alt, R&B, and more, “city on fire” is a strong introduction to the journey of nokio’s artistry. On the track, he shares, “This song serves as a thematic and sonic middle ground between the beginning and end of the album…On the surface, 'city on fire' appears to be just a love song, but in truth, it’s my love letter to music itself—to all the influences I’ve inherited over the years, both new and old.” This sentiment shines through the track’s complex sound and interwoven emotion, which is a feat to accomplish in a single only 3 minutes long. It feels vast yet dense, truly evoking the feeling nokio mentioned of bridging the sparkle of a new beginning with the weight of chapter ending.

The melodies in “city on fire” are instant, from the moment the song starts it feels special. nokio’s vocals are embellished with emotion, showcasing his range and memorable delivery. As the track builds, the energy is lifted off into the clouds. And when the beat switches, it’s impossible to not be hooked.

While there’s so much going on sonically, there’s also ample space left for all of the production elements to breathe. The track stays open and airy while exploring a range of sound and emotion, further driving home the dichotomous theme explored in this stellar debut. We can’t wait to hear what’s next from nokio and his new journey.
