Odie Leigh Serves Up a Classic Duet with Field Medic on "All Star Breakfast"

Odie Leigh’s whirlwind year isn’t slowing down. She supported Shakey Graves on his US tour in May, played six festivals, is currently on her own headline tour that goes through December, and released her debut album Carrier Pigeon in July. Now she’s teaming up with her friend, Field Medic, on “All Star Breakfast.”

“I wrote ‘All Star Breakfast’ 3 years ago in my trailer one night and kept it in my back pocket hoping the right moment would come along to release it,” Leigh shared, “and after a month of recording my album, Carrier Pigeon, with Derek Ted, we felt like it would be sweet to go back to a stripped, cute folksy vibe for a change. We had been hoping to find a song to collaborate with Kevin (Field Medic) on and knew this ancient track was the perfect choice. Cutesy, simple, and poetic, it felt like the perfect classic duet. Kevin re-wrote a couple verses and we recorded it together in an afternoon. We wanted to keep a backyard, old timey feel to it, and I hope y’all find it as sweet as we do!”

Backyard, old timey feel is the perfect way to describe the song. The only elements of the song are a plucking acoustic guitar and the singers’ intertwining voices, making it easy to imagine Leigh and Field Medic performing the song around a crackling fire. The lyrics have a nostalgic feel to them, especially in the second verse with the mention of an “old t-shirt with the scoop neck stretched / and the cut off sleeves” and “a second helping of grandma’s famous dish.” The chorus’ final lyrics are optimistic with Leigh and Field Medic singing “So when I get to thinking / and my thinking’s quite the mess / I think us lonely people could make something out of this,” in harmony.

The accompanying music video is filmed on a grainy camera and features shots of the two singers performing the song intertwined with shots of a classic American diner breakfast. It feels stripped back in the best sense of the words. The vibe is American road trip, specifically the moment where you eat a meal at a random roadside diner and it ends up being one of your favorite moments of the trip. At the end of the video Leigh says “Perfect” to which Field Medic replies “Yeah, that was gold,” and we couldn’t agree more.
