Ovrkast. and Samara Cyn Give It to Us Straight in New Single “Small Talk”
June Gloom is still a couple of months away, but this week has brought Ovrkast. and Samara Cyn together for an exciting collaboration on “Small Talk.”
Despite its title, “Small Talk” cuts straight to the chase. Ovrkast. and Cyn lay out their grievances with cheapskates and industry schmoozers with lyrics like, “Uncle Sam slick robbed me, n***** pulling strings for the bass notes,” and “Long way, run around the main point / That sound like you owe me some money.”
The track opens and closes with a mellow melody of “oohs” over an old school fugue-inspired Wurlitzer part speckled with tracking noise, before switching into the jazzy low-fi production Ovrkast. is usually known for. The song’s sensually simple loop consists of soulful piano chords, a repeating sustained trumpet melody, and sprinkler-style hi-hats atop a buried 808, a signature of Ovrkast.’s production style.
The pair’s raps shine equally with Ovrkast.’s flow floating felicitously over the instrumental, while Cyn’s sharp delivery provides a welcome switchup on the second half of the song. Cyn’s rap-singing on the hook fits the pocket of the beat perfectly, providing an infectious refrain betwixt the duo’s verses.
The track is the first release of the year for Ovrkast., also serving as the rapper-producer’s sole follow-up (aside from a MajorStage live recording of his song “SLOW MONEY”) to his third studio album KAST GOT WINGS, which dropped in October of last year. Cyn’s debut album also dropped back in October, which teased the pair’s collaborative work on the track “KO” on which Silas Wilson, aka Ovrkast., is credited as a songwriter. “Small Talk” arrives less than a week before Cyn is set to head out on the 'Kountry Kousins Tour' with fellow rapper-singer Smino.
