Post Sex Nachos on Their New Album "Big Bad" (Q&A)
With a band name like Post Sex Nachos, people will want to inquire what is the story behind the name. Well, the members of the band were tight lipped about it since they get asked about the topic numerous times. “Every time people ask us this, the most truthful answer is that we are at no liberty tell,” jokes lead guitarist Mitch Broddon. “It’s nothing personal. We went through the years of making up fake stories. So, we just told the public that we can’t tell,” says bassist Chase Mueller.
Post Sex Nachos came together in the Midwest as friends and started creating some nifty rock tunes. “Chase and I met in our freshman year at the University of Missouri. We were both in bands together. We messaged in our massive group chat and Hunter Pendleton, who hadn’t drummed in ten years or so, posted that he was a drummer. He then bought his first drum kit on Facebook marketplace on that same day and joined the band” says lead vocalist Sammy Elfanbaum.
Soon enough Jack Hazel joined on keys to fit the circumference of the band’s sound. “A year later we were going to play our first live show. We needed a keyboardist to fill out our sound on the songs we recorded. Mitch learned the piano parts even though he played guitar,” says Elfanbaum. “It was a true four-piece rock band for a while until we added keys and synth elements. Our current keyboardist is Jack Hazel,” says Broddon.
The band admits that they finally nailed their sound down with their new album, Big Bad, out September 18. The quintet forged ahead with their ever-evolving sonic palette. “We finally found our sound with this new album coming out in September. We found our sonic identity with this album. We picked up street knowledge and song structure along the way since our first self-titled venture back in 2020.” says Elfanbaum. “Sonically Big Bad is our most cohesive album we have done together,” says Broddon.
The two singles released ahead of the album are the sentimental “Sound of You” and the catchy “A Lot To Lose” featuring the talented sister brother trio Bailen. “The tunes came from over a span of five months with different ideas that we had. Everything was not written before the studio. It was one song at a time,” says Broddon. “Sound of You” was the turning point in the recording process. Once we started taking the risk with that song, we went backwards and beefed up the others. That ended up setting the tone for the rest of the record.” Elfanbaum adds, “I usually have a lyrical idea and transform them into songs with all their parts and keep the lyric and chord structure.”
The New York City trio Bailen helped to make Post Sex Nachos’ “A Lot To Lose” one of the most thoughtful tunes on the album. “They make very timeless music, they’re so talented, and can fill a space with their vocals and instruments alone. When I listen to them, they remind me of Fleetwood Mac. We don’t really do cowrites with anyone outside the band, but “A Lot To Lose” came out great with them.” says Elfanbaum.
The band worked closely with producer Aaron Wagner, who cut his teeth on the Nashville scene with the alternative pop trio Veaux, helped to define the band’s modern rock sound. “Aaron Wagner garnered his credits along the way, and he is Nashville’s hidden gem. We meshed super well off the bat,” says Elfanbaum.
With summer festival season in full swing, the band will be playing a few shows but is gearing up for a full headline tour come this Fall. The rock act already performed at Lollapalooza in the past and the rained-out Bonnaroo but looking ahead they are most excited for their headlining tour coming up in support of their new album this Fall. “Lollapalooza 2024 was a dream come true for all of us. Bonnaroo was an unfortunate wash out. We played a few summer festivals, and we doubled and largely surpassed the crowd size by playing at Lollapalooza that year. It was our largest crowd to date.” says Brodden. “We always play sets that are engaging that draw people in. Playing those festivals, you play for a ton of new people,” says Chase Meuller.
The band plays a few slots over the summer. “We have Summerfest in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in June. We are playing in Upstate New York with The Strumbellas. Then we go back to Wisconsin for Paperfest and Mile A Music,” says Broddon. “We are playing some opening slots this summer, and then we are headlining in the Fall,” says Elfanbaum.
