Quadeca Embarks on a Journey of a Lifetime in 'Vanisher, Horizon Scraper'

Though it’s only been about a year and a half since Quadeca delivered fans his 2024 record SCRAPYARD, it’s clear that the LA artist hasn’t skipped a day in the studio since. Once known for his YouTube career and internet hip-hop stylistics, today the young multi-hyphenate is perhaps better known for being an artist in a perpetual state of transformation, and his newest release is no exception. Ambitious, narrative-driven, and impossible to confine to one style or sound, Vanisher, Horizon Scraper is the newest entry into an already stacked discography.

Synthesizing avant-garde pop with hip-hop, classical, ambient, and endless complex geographical influences, Vanisher, Horizon Scraper is a dense conceptual work that sees Quadeca embarking on both an internal and external journey. Moments of pensive desolation on tracks like the Olēka-assisted “WAGING WAR” feel just at home on this epic as cinematic and larger-than-life songs like “THAT’S WHY.” Everything is equally as important and dramatic, even the nature of the album’s story calls into question whether the character is truly running towards something greater, like purpose, clarity, or spirituality, or instead running away from something. Whether confronting mythical beasts with Danny Brown on “THE GREAT BAKUNAWA” or lost in the psychedelic ambience of “I DREAM ABOUT SINKING,” every moment of Vanisher, Horizon Scraper feels just as nuanced as it is understated.

Despite Vanisher, Horizon Scraper ultimately being an exciting and almost operatic tale, Quadeca’s story still consists of several moments of occasional peace and calm. Tracks like “GODSTAINED” and “DANCING WITHOUT MOVING” feel feather-light and filled with airy woodwinds, gossamer vocal melodies, and lyrics that occasionally read like Rousseauian meditations. Alongside the more abrasive and heavy-hitting tracks like “THUNDRRR” and album closer “CASPER” with Maruja, Vanisher, Horizon Scraper is a record you truly need to experience firsthand to understand.
