Se So Neon Embarks on a Conversation With Themselves in "Twit Winter" [Q&A]

Twit as a word needs a revival moment, and who better to drive that than the celebrated and eccentric Se So Neon, a band famous for genre collision sounds, compelling live shows and brilliant artwork. In "Twit Winter," and its memorable visual accompaniment, we are taken in by a guitar melody, sweet Korean lyricism,  and a mindset that drifts between alternative and indie pop. Startled by the self-directed visual companion work, we hit up the band to dig into the song's genesis, the trials of directing your own work, and the best dish to hit next time you are in Korea.

OnesToWatch: Who is Se So Neon?

Se So Neon: Se So Neon is a band born in Korea and traveling through different parts of the world as we live our lives. The name means “New Boy” or “Bird Boy” in Korean.

We love the word twit, begs us to ask what is "Twit Winter" all about?

It’s a song born out of a foolish winter. To fully understand each track, it probably helps to understand the whole upcoming album, but “Twit Winter” is like a radio signal exchanged between the Se So Neon of the present and the Se So Neon of the future. It’s a musical inquiry to myself—about what will change and what will remain unchanged over the flow of time.

Did you write the song with any collaborators? Who produced it?

I produced the track, and Kenny Gilmore—who I really admire—co-produced it with me.

You also created a wildly unique video to support the song. Who directed it?

I directed it myself, together with Hwang Hyunjin, a close friend and filmmaker I respect in Korea. All the videos that will follow have also been directed by me. Rather than using large-scale production, I handled everything—from the initial concept to location scouting, shooting, and styling—myself. This video was started in 2025 but won’t be completed until 2065. Soyoon is expected to return in 40 years to finish it. I probably won’t take on something this ambitious again, but just this once, I wanted to bring every idea in my head to life, on my own terms.

Say we failed both art school and Korean on Duolingo… what would you say the visual is about?

The video is divided into an internal world and an external world. There’s the Seoul of 2025, and a campfire in a cube where time can’t be measured. What connects those two worlds is language and symbols (cards) representing the present.

Even when I shiver in the cold of a harsh city, there's always a burning fire inside. I keep trying to bring enough firewood to keep it alive. I always need that fire—it's the only thing that makes me feel warm.

No matter how much time passes, I think I will continue this camping. I’m waiting there for the version of Soyoon who will return after time has passed.

The words I feel and speak in moments—my records and experiences—scatter into the world. They become ash, become someone else’s nourishment, and return to the world in another form.

Rather than placing the past, present, and future in separate boxes, I feel them coexisting in a cyclical form. In that way, the Soyoon of the past, present, and future continues to feel deeply, to express her struggles in different ways—or simply to enjoy them.

"Twit Winter "begins and ends with a foolish question from a scrappy Soyoon who doesn’t know anything about life, asking her future self if she might have the answer. And—who knows? Maybe in 40 years, Soyoon will come back with a completely different reply.

The plan is to release additional music as well? What’s the plan for that?

Yes, there are more singles and videos to be released before the album comes out. Please stay tuned!

Besides this excellent single and additional music, what else should we be on the lookout for?

Over the past one to two years, I’ve kept a lot of records throughout my creative journey. I plan to start sharing those one by one. Also, I’m really looking forward to this year’s touring.

What’s inspiring you right now outside of music?

Everything outside of music fascinates me too. Traveling the world, encountering new scenes, and turning life into a journey—that’s probably the most inspiring thing right now.

Give us one or two must-do things if we are visiting Korea?

If you visit Korea, you must try the food! I hope you enjoy the seasonal fruits and dishes. Korea has so many different things to enjoy. I personally love tteokbokki, so please try some! Also, there are many great places to visit outside of Seoul. If you're on a longer trip, I recommend stepping outside the city.

Who are your current Ones to Watch?

Not exactly a newcomer, but I’ve been really enjoying Nourished by Time’s music lately.
