Searows' "martingale" Is a Haunting Meditation on the Pieces That Form Us

A pioneer of modern indie-folk and featured artist in the latest Heatwave issue of our Zine, Searows has graced the big thinkers of the world with a new track to ponder, titled “martingale.”

Searows’ latest single “martingale” expands upon the artist’s already flourishing brainchild of a discography. It glitters with the poetic language and musical instincts singular to the artist’s perspective. Searows’ songs often find themselves exploring overarching themes in the attempt to understand the life one traverses in the transition from childhood to adulthood, creating throughlines between aging, belonging, love, and purpose.

“martingale” is no different, liltingly observant as the main guitar takes a thoughtful walk down the chord progression. Searows drapes the choruses in harmonies, reaching into lofty high melodies that bring a new ache to the sound. Floating above the familiar low of Searows’ main vocals, the harmonies add a sweetness that delicately highlights the heaviness of the lyrics.

Spiraling from the concept of inherited traits and tendencies passed down through families, Searows has found a gorgeous lens through which to paint these hardships. “It's the body's affliction / It's the pain making circles in you / Like dogs that just wanna get loose,” sings Searows.

Embrace “martingale” with open arms and a thoughtful mind, and learn more about Searows in issue 06 of our zine, available here
