Sekou Gives Himself Time to Move on in the Heartbreaking "let go of me slowly"
Rising 19-year-old artist Sekou comes through to break our hearts yet again with his passionate new single, "let go of me slowly." The track is a new heart-shattering anthem that centers around the breakdown of a romantic relationship and sees a return to his earlier balladeer offerings. His robust yet synonymous track showcases his rich tone laid over minimalistic production, offering a wellspring of emotional expression and relatable sentiments.
The single's powerful yet stripped-back production is composed of a solo piano that effortlessly captures the mood of Sekou's longing and yearnful lyricism. Living in conflict, he urges his ex-partner to remember the good times fondly in hopes of something bittersweet. Knowing that the end is near, he pleads for things to end softly. Melancholic, raw, and truthful, he sings the chorus, "Can you promise/ Say you'll remember my name/ Say that you'll remember the way it felt to hold me/ Even if you won't please/ Tell me, must I remember the pain?/ Is that all you'll leave me with? If your lettin' go, please/ Let go of me slowly."
"This song was inspired by a time in my life when I was going through something, and I didn't know how to express my feelings about it," shares Sekou. "It took some time but I went back, I re-read the old texts, and I was finally able to put the words down on paper - I knew I needed to be honest. It's freeing - and it's supposed to be about getting things off your chest and removing that heavy weight from your shoulders that can sometimes still be there after a relationship breaks down."
2024 has been a year of milestones for Sekou. It kicked off with a BRITs' Rising Star' nomination, making him the youngest-ever nominee in the awards' history. He then secured a spot in the top 10 of the BBC Radio 1 'Sound Polls'. Next, he graced the cover of Notion Magazine as one of Amazon Music's Breakthrough Artists of 2024. He also joined Renée Rapp's 'Snow Hard Feelings' tour, performing 12 UK and European shows. And the momentum continues as Sekou gears up for his own live shows this summer, including the highly-anticipated One Night Only show on May 13 at Omeara London, Cross The Tracks Festival on May 26, and Latitude Festival in July.
