Shanae on Growing Up, Finding Her Sound and Her Newest Single ‘illusions’
Coming in smooth with style and finesse, South African born Australian Shanae Masters is reinventing what we know as R&B and soul. With music both lush and serene, this young Aussie creative captivates audiences with her femininity, allure, and overall fearless nature to better her craft. Formally known as MADAME3MPRESS, Shanae’s music navigates listeners through their own independence leaving those feeling empowered and heard through just one listen.
A natural-born artist, Shanae grew up within a musical family spreading from her parents even out towards her cousins. It’s no surprise music inevitably became a norm to her. Armed with curiosity and encouragement, the piano was her first weapon and from there she found the saxophone, where she then entered a prestigious jazz school.
“I started playing saxophone and joined the school band. Then one day I went to my lesson, and I was singing outside, and Rory (founder of the school) goes ‘was that you?’ and he made me sing for him. He was like, ‘why are you playing the saxophone, you should just be singing’. And that gave me the confidence to find my voice and start singing. I started song writing lessons and learning how to express myself through song, and that’s how it came about”.
Her uniqueness and ability to take hold of her own growth and formation is both strong and humble, allowing herself the freedom to cross genres and build an anchor for her music through her lyrics and undeniably sensual melodies. Similar to the likes of Snoh Aalegra and Ambre, leave it to Shanae to give you 110% with every release, offering you different perspectives to life.
“I have a cunning ability to be extremely dramatic about things. For example, I could experience something so small, and I could write a whole album it. It's all there. So yeah, I would say that I write a lot about my experiences that's about the same situation but maybe different perspectives”.
