Sienna Spiro Muses on the What Ifs in "BUTTERFLY EFFECT"

The butterfly effect: the phenomenon whereby a minute localized change in a complex system can trigger large effects elsewhere. In her new single “BUTTERFLY EFFECT,” Sienna Spiro reflects on her own personal butterfly effect. The song opens with ascending and descending piano notes before Spiro’s emotional voice comes in strong with the opening lyrics “Goddamn.” Right off the bat, it is clear that Spiro is going through something. This isn’t a song born from a perfect night out with friends; it’s a song born from heartbreak and pain.

In the chorus, Spiro reflects on her butterfly effect, leaving her loved one. Spiro sings “If only I had left that evening / I would never crave the feeling / Never would've come to see you / On a red-eye on a redo / If I never heard that name / I could look at you the same / I can't afford to lose you, honey / So maybe you pretend to love me,” her voice rising in both tone and intensity as the chorus comes to a climax with the final lyrics.

The second verse flows with regret, as Spiro dives into the events of “that evening.” She tells her lover “I'll unravel in your Mustang / Just so you can trust me / I'll morph into any shape you like.” The chorus repeats, once again reminding listeners of the consequences and pain that came from the small decision to stay the night, rather than leave. Spiro’s voice pairs perfectly with the rich piano and gentle strings that accompany it to create an emotional yet powerful ballad.

On January 24, Spiro posted on Instagram about the song’s release, writing in the caption “Guyssss this song means so much to me; not just because of the story it tells. but because it’s the introduction to something larger…” Luckily, fans did not have to wait long for the something larger. On January 27, Spiro came back to Instagram to announce her debut EP Sink Now, Swim Later, out on February 21.
