Sophie Powers Strikes Like Lightning in "Goals"

It is no exaggeration to say that when a new Sophie Powers song drops, a jolt of energy surges through the collective body of pop music. That is how much charge her tracks carry. Powers' latest single, "Goals," is no exception. With power chords flanked by swelling and crackling synths riding a bolting beat, she makes her statements spark, and each reverb-doused vocal becomes even more electric.

Ever the energetic performer, Powers fuses the fun and rapid tempo of "Goals" with an infectious panache that could reawaken even the most defeated listener and embolden them to chase their own ambitions. While it would be easy to classify "Goals" as an anthemic sprint, the seamless blend of hyperpop with early 2000s emo and pop-punk influences adds depth and appeal. The track captures the communal emotions of post-millennial teenage angst while leveraging earworm modern production.

The song opens with Powers singing, "There's an itsy-bitsy little part of me who wants more / Just kidding, it's a big one / This is Hello-Kitty-boots-on-your-neck-girl core / Headbanging like a kick drum." It quickly becomes clear that you either get with the program or you get out of the way. A detail-oriented musician and fashion designer, Powers designs her own stage outfits, and with the same care every verse and chorus is intentional in its wattage, amplifying her confident persona.

Powers released her second EP, Glitch: Lvl 1, last year, where high-velocity, self-assured tracks similar to "Goals" merge with more emotional and vulnerable moments, such as "Obsessed," a collaboration with fellow rising star Ashley Sienna. The record showcases a spectrum of emotions and honesty, positioning Powers as a generational voice tackling pop music in a novel way while staying true to the genre’s essence. Stylish, talented, and fully aware that hard work pays off, Powers' promise is undeniable, and it shows in bright hues of color and high-voltage music.
