Refugee Rapper Star2 Finds Catharsis in 'Real Life'

Asian American singer, songwriter, and rapper Star2’s smooth, charismatic quality over gleaming, vibrant backdrops make for confident music that is entirely addictive. His new EP Real Life is gritty and raw, brimming with that same infectious fervor he has become known for. The bold in-your-face beats grab you instantly, hooking you right from outset. Those powerful rhythms paired with his warm, seductive tone are staples of Star2’s profound musical pieces, and his authenticity explodes in this elevated offering.

Real Life kicks off with the fresh sounds of “I Wanna Get F’d Up.” With colorful, clicking arrangements and his fierce voice, Star2 has crafted a song that soars. Then there’s the title track, which is organic and highly poignant. Detailing the difficulties he has dealt with in his life, you can hear his immense strength shine through. “December” is a bright bop to get us through colder seasons. All about wishing you had the one you love close so you can stay warm in the cold, this infectious track is sure to light a fire in your soul.  Concluding with “Big Bands,” Star2 ends on a high note, evoking the rush of Drake’s “Started From The Bottom.” The dazzling synths, booming bass, and animated vocals create the ideal EP standout that pairs perfectly with the accompanying Grand Theft Auto-inspired music video.

Star2's come-up story is not one that exists solely for the narrative but stems from deeply personal experiences. The radiant hip-hop and R&B talent was born into a refugee camp in Thailand. His people, the Ka-ren from Burma, have suffered genocide by the Burmese military and Myanmar government, which ultimately forced him to flee to the U.S. with his grandmother. Life growing up in San Diego though was not much easier though, as every day was a struggle to make ends meet. Yet, music was always a cathartic outlet for Star2 to transform his pain into something greater. Now. blowing up in the hip-hop world, Star2 is a reminder of the power of perseverance.
