OTW Weekly(ish) Rewind: June 2024

Take a stroll with us through the latest works of visual bliss, soundtracking some of the best new releases in indie music.

“Last Time We Never Meet Again” by Sarah Kinsley

Other worlds, magical portals, wrestling with your friends, bridging the connectivity between us and our decisions – Sarah Kinsley covers it all in this wonderful visual short story. The single, a precursor to her upcoming album ESCAPER, is a window into themes permeating the rest of the work, a journey into the escapism we pursue, and we are here for it. Dive into the next dimension here:

“If Only” by The Marías

If you're ever as dramatic as this supple song, then consider yourself seen in this wondrously crafted dreamscape to go along with your big emotions. Hanging from a chandelier in a cloudscape, lead singer María Zardoya is seen precariously vulnerable, an apt reflection of the song’s lyrics, wonderfully presented by director Bethany Vargas. This is cinematography done right. Soar head first into the clouds here:

 ‘CARRIED AWAY’ by Logan Avidan

With only a handful of singles under her belt, satisfying the style for Logan’s very nostalgic leaning grrl grungepop isn’t an easy task: one moment she channels the neophyte seduction of early Fiona Apple, the next the chewy contagious fuzz lyricism of Kim Deal. On "Carried Away," using NYC nightlife as backdrop, director Savannah Kodish & cinematographer Ilona Tuominen leaned into the decadent party girl vibes, a bar hopping, photo booth kissing romp that feels very on the edge of getting carried away. “Ex-Girlfriend’ Erika de Casier feat. Shygirl

We’ve all been there, doing something our mind knows is wrong, a sensory prison trapping it while our body does its lustful ambitions. Directors Isa Castro-Cota & Tiff Prichett do a masterful job, particularly with a camera within camera effect that holds this narrative delicately, with alternating black & white wardrobe furthering the contrasting instincts, good and bad behaviors. The visuals are bettered by Shygirls verse as a moment of consciousness, a close dose of perspective before falling back into our baser self:

“HAPPY ENDING” Baebee

As an artist, baebee is as lucidly vivid as they come: fun, quirky, rife with sensations, interesting in tempo, melody & delivery. Not easy to condense to a short form visual but on “HAPPY ENDING” using the backdrop of NYC on a brisk day, they let the camera do its magic. Along with codirector Evan Deng, baebeee was letting a series of impromptu photo shoots become an intrusive BTS that lets the vibes of the song kick off in full. Get your best portrait here:
