Welcome to the Gauzy Dreamscape of Wisp's Debut Album, 'If Not Winter'

Wisp has unveiled their highly anticipated debut album, If Not Winter, that is a fever dream of maximalism, shoegaze, and woefully exquisite angst. Throughout the listening experience across the 12-track project, we are welcomed into a magnificent and fantastical world that is rooted in folk, rock and nu-metal pop. And at it's core, If Not Winter is a love letter to the shoegaze genre by an artist inspired by the likes of Whirr and Slowdive (which let us not forget, she toured with in 2024.)

“Breathe onto me.” is the second track, an emotionally charged ballad that is rife with mesmerizing guitar, crashing cymbals and a dizzying bassline. Of the track, Wisp says “"'Breathe onto me' is a fun play on affection, touch, and love on the surface. It's about the simplicity of physical relationships and how they can totter between innocent and lustful." Artfully towing the line between flirtatious and reflective, the release of the track is a full circle moment for both Wisp and dedicated fans, as the track has been teased on socials, “I’ve been waiting for this for years.” with a cryptic messaging building anticipation for its release. And rest assured, “Breathe onto me.” lives up to the hype, and is far from scratching the surface of what Wisp has to offer.

“Save me now” is a grungier, wistful highlight of If Not Winter, and showcases the boundaries Wisp is pushing in this experimental debut. With an ethereal, restrained opening that strikes the listener, “Give me just one day, with your face beside me// Will you make me feel okay from running away from here?” The track approaches the chorus as Wisp sings, “I’m paralyzed//With you on my mind//I’m bleeding out//Could you save me now?” Paired with a seamless distortion of Wisp’s vocals that melt into the earworm of instrumentation in the background. The combination truly feels explosive in a way that feels otherworldly, and is a spirited treat that wears the heart on its sleeve.

This release caps off a truly exciting year for Wisp, following debut appearances at Coachella and Bonnaroo, Wisp is gearing up for an extensive headlining tour alongside support dates for System of a Down, KORN, Deftones and Avenged Sevenfold. We are excited to see where the shoegaze aficionado as she hits the mainstream with a vengeance.
