William Beckmann Oozes Masochistic Pain on “You Only Love To Break My Heart”
Just over a year following the release of his latest studio album, Whiskey Lies & Alibis, Del Rio, TX-based troubadour William Beckmann is commencing the rollout process for a new record, slated for release in early 2027. During an intimate, request-focused concert at Philadelphia, PA’s Milkboy this past Thursday night, a rare northeast appearance from the often-southern state-straddled Beckmann, the crooner performed three tracks from the still-untitled project.
One of these tunes, “You Only Love To Break My Heart,” was released just hours later as his de facto lead single. This is impeccable timing, as Beckmann is set to open for several Texas dates of modern country queen Kacey Musgraves’ Middle of Nowhere Tour later this week.
Beckmann, who split his time between Del Rio and Chihuahua, Mexico in his early years, is commended for his bilingual tendencies as well as his inherent stylistic callbacks to acts like Roy Orbison and Elvis Presley, with both his growing repertoire of original material and stunning covers of classics like “Volver, Volver” by Vincente Fernández and “For The Good Time” by Kris Kristofferson. On “You Only Love…,” Beckmann continues his ongoing musical partnership with revered songwriters Jesse Jo Dillon and Konrad Snyder, delivering a sensuous, forlorn dose of his trademark Latin-infused Americana.
The tune opens with Beckmann’s rich baritenor, as well as his mature lyrical themes, fully centered with solely intermittent guitar strokes for accompaniment: “I love the way that you touch me/ And how your lips feel on mine/ How did I end up drunk even you drink all of my wine?” It isn’t long before the full breadth of the arrangement kicks in, with salsa-aided percussion and a righteous and measured Mexicano groove to support the emotional tension between Beckmann and his subject, who is referenced in the tune with a female-led vocal layer.
A skilled and credible narrative-driven storyteller, Beckmann admits that, while the tune is partially influenced by real-life implications, its development is largely fictional. “Personally, I’ve experienced a situation where I thought a girl was way more into me than she actually was,” Beckmann said in a press statement. “When I hear ‘You Only Love…,’ I can picture Salma Hayek and Antonio Banderas in Desperado. It’s sexy, cool, and vulnerable.” This is exacerbated by additional lyrics throughout the tune, such as, “You make it look so natural, baby/ I kind of die every time you leave the room, and leave me drownin’ in the sheets full of your perfume.” No stranger to successfully accessing mature material, Beckmann remains an archetype among his field.
