100 gecs Hits Up Charli XCX, Rico Nasty, and Kero Kero Bonito For the "ringtone (remix)"

Hyper pop is a tumultuous genre as they come. It is built on the conceit of daring modern art, in pushing the standard conventions of mass-marketed pop just to the point of breaking all in the hopes of arriving at a space that has yet to be fully explored. The result is often jarring as it is infectious. And 100 gecs is looking to be the next purveyors of this genre built by the likes of Eurodance and PC Music.

Comprised of Laura Les and Dylan Brady, 100 gecs' latest outing sees them enlisting Charli XCX, Rico Nasty, and Kero Kero Bonito to reimagine "ringtone," taken from their debut album 1000 gecs. The new remix follows A. G. Cook's remix of the duo's breakout single "money machine" and Injury Reserve's remix of "745 sticky," and is the latest remix from 100 gecs' forthcoming remix album, 1000 gecs & The Tree of Clues.

"ringtone (remix)" is as unpredictable as its list of notable collaborators. Every second is brimming with varied flourishes, multi-textured production quirks and blips. Yet, at no point does its new features get lost in the hyper futuristic daydream, as Kero Kero Bonito launches into a characteristically twee yet ominous verse, Rico Nasty spits over a sudden deluge of electric guitars, or Charli XCX delivers a wholly infectious chorus.

In many ways, 100 gecs' music feels almost custom made for the sole purpose of being remixed. It is a brand of hyper pop that reaches even greater heights when each newly introduced voice is allowed to push, pull, prod, and experiment with the abundant soundscape on display.
